Android: Impressive advancements and progression

When mobile phones first came on the market they were bulky, had a short battery life and were nothing more than a basic device used for receiving calls. Over time technology has advanced dramatically and mobile phones have become multimedia devices that can be utilised for almost any function. The mobile phone sector is highly competitive and there are several huge name brands that dominate, however only 2 operating systems have really made an impact on an international scale. The first is Apple, with its iPhone and iPad that run iOS and the second more popular OS is Android, a non device specific system that can power a multitude of different branded mobile phones and tablets.

Android’s appeal lies in its ability to work across a wide range of platforms, its user friendly functionality and its focus on open source and free facilities. Backed by Google, Android offers users the opportunity to game on the go, download apps and run software that can turn their smart phone into an office on the move. The Google Play Store is Androids own marketplace and the expansion of this sector has been phenomenal. The mobile store experienced growth of 311% in one year and in 2012 75% of smart phones released around the world were powered by Android.

Competition between mobile providers continues to be fierce and one of the major advantages of Android is its compatibility with online software and technology. The iOS battled with online compatibility initially, whereas Android was easily able to play the Flash based games that remain so popular. Android specific sites such as AndroidCasino.com.au that offer optimised gaming are an international favourite as they allow users the chance to enjoy all their favourite real money casino games on the go. The Apple store still refuses to release real money games, but developers have worked around this and created games compatible with iPhone and iPad devices. The delay in releasing iOS optimised games afforded Android a head start and many players prefer the Android based platform for gaming on both tablets and smart phone.

The current Android market continues to grow and with new apps, downloads and updates becoming available every day the future of this OS looks solid. The apps are created to appeal to a diverse range of users and Android aims to cater to gamers, business users and professionals.

The Ford Fiesta: an impressive supermini

The latest industry figures for 2012 tell us that the Ford Fiesta is the most popular new car in the UK. The stats also show that Fiesta’s ‘supermini’ size is by some chunky margin the most popular. In the UK we like our cars small, hatchback, modern, and with frugal engines. Here’s our breakdown of Fiesta’s trendy formula.

Finding a Fiesta

If you’re looking for a great supermini, the Fiesta should be at the top of your buying list, and because it’s such a big-seller you’ll find plenty of nearly new and used examples at a car auction; a very good place to start your buying search.

Small, but perfectly formed

The small supermini shape has long been popular in the UK and Europe with our busy cities, high fuel prices and practicality needs meaning that the supermini hatchbacks are perfect for our requirements, thanks to their easy to access big boots, small and frugal engines, and nippy body sizes. The Fiesta firmly ticks all of these boxes, and that’s why it leads the new car sales chart with nearly 110,000 models sold in the UK in 2012.

Strange as it may seem, but the smaller the car the harder it is for designers and manufacturers to package them. Packaging a car means using the available space inside the car very cleverly to offer the right amount of seating and passenger space and boot space, as well as leaving room to comfortably lay out everything the passengers and driver needs, like the air-conditioning, radio and sat-nav controls. And having driven the latest range of Fiesta models, I can confirm that the Ford engineers have perfectly-packaged their successful supermini.

A modern masterpiece

First up, it looks cool. The old saying of looking fast while it’s parked up can definitely be applied to the Fiesta. With its aerodynamic wedge body shape and chunky body styling, the Fiesta manages to looks modern, tough and well-engineered. And for the latest 2013 Fiesta model the Ford designers reworked the front-end with a large chrome front grille that looks a lot like an Aston Martin’s. Aggressive-looking, modern new headlights also complement the latest Fiesta, although you’ll not find one of these for sale on the used car market just yet.

However, even with a lack of the very latest Fiestas on the used car market, the previous model is pretty much exactly the same as the current car, but with different front-end styling. And with the new car now on the market hopefully prices for used Fiestas will drop as they currently hold their prices very well. That’s great news for sellers; less great for buyers.

Fun to drive

On the road and the Fiesta really impresses. If I had to choose a car in this market segment that’s fun to drive and suits both sexes for styling, then I couldn’t beat the Fiesta. It can cruise quietly and safely on the motorway whilst still being small and nimble for faster fun on your favourite back lane bends.

And so comfortable

And, most important for me as a very tall driver – some 6’ 4” tall – is the Fiesta’s impressively comfortable driving position. The Ford engineers designed in plenty of adjustment for the driver’s seat and steering wheel, meaning that very short or very tall drivers can find a comfortable and ergonomic seating position from which to dispatch long journeys. I drove 500 miles in one day in a Fiesta without so much as crick to the neck! A supreme supermini indeed.

Standout features of the BMW 5 Series Saloon

The all-new BMW 5 Series model brings everything the famously technologically advanced brand has to offer in terms of modern style, frugal engines and safety technology; both passive and active. In such a competitive market, a manufacturer must beat its rival with their very best. That’s the 5 Series, and here are its standout features.

Outer style

On the outside, leading from the front, we see the trademark BMW kidney front grille set in a curved nose and flanked by a pair of twin-projector headlights. The real curving and sculpting detail [...] Continue Reading…

Retro rocket

Fashion can be fickle. In a bid the look the bee’s knees we sometimes wear the wrong clothes and end up regretting it when we’re wet through on a rainy night. But, hell yes, we looked good! In these tough times we can’t afford to do that with our bikes, but this Kawasaki W800 gets the cool retro style, with modern kit and comfort. Win!

There are some customers, as a motorcycle maker, who you really want to attract. Older guys with money to spend are the perfect example. It’s [...] Continue Reading…
